About Iron River EMS
Iron River EMS is a volunteer EMS agency
We serve the towns of Delta, Hughes, Iron River, Oulu, and Tripp.
EMS stands for Emergency Medical Services, a system that includes 9-1-1 radio communications, bystanders, pre-hospital responders, ambulance transport, and hospital care. Iron River EMS is an integral part of our local EMS systems.
Iron River EMS provides pre-hospital care and transport to patients in addition to medical support for fire department responses and community events.
Iron River EMS Facts
- Responds to approximately 300 calls for service annually
- Staffed by 20 volunteer EMRs and EMTs
- Our primary service area is 234 square miles and includes Delta, Hughes, Oulu, and Tripp as well as Iron River
- Volunteers train and respond year-round
- Volunteers are community members who give their time and talents for the well-being of the community – you and your family
- Volunteers are paid a small stipend for responding, but time for training, meetings, and planning are on a volunteer basis
- Volunteers are subject to the state and federal training requirements and professional standards as career departments in large cities
EMR
Emergency Medical Responders (EMR) are trained for 80 hours and licensed to provide hands-on emergency care especially related to trauma, chest pain, cardiac arrest, and difficulty breathing.
EMT
Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) are trained for 180 hours and licensed for the same skills as EMRs but also provide additional skills including medications for allergic reactions, difficulty breathing, diabetic emergencies, and chest pain.
Intercepts
When patients would benefit from additional medical interventions, an “Intercept” offering additional skills may be requested from other ground or air ambulances.
